Production of Elephant Dung Paper
Working and retired elephants from camps and sanctuaries around northern Thailand produce the raw material for our paper. We collect the dung and transport it to our factory where it is allowed to dry for several days. The dung is then washed to remove unwanted material such as rocks and sticks, and then boiled in a sodium hydroxide solution. At that point the dung is either sent on to make a natural color paper, or died various colors to produce the different colors used in making the many Elephant Dung Paper products. The dung is carefully measured into 300 to 500 gram portions to make a single sheet of paper, depending of the desired thickness of the paper. The portions of dung are then added to vats of water. After dispersing in the water, the dung is removed with mesh frames. The mesh frames are then dried for several days after which the finished paper is removed. The various colored paper is then sent to our artisans for production of the final products.
